ಪೂರ್ವಿ comes up through a government residential school. ಶರತ್ carries the weight of middle-class expectation. She gives up a medical seat to come to engineering; he ends up in engineering because his marks left him nowhere else to go. The novel is the pull and drag between the two of them.
Both are trying to climb out of where they started, and both keep being held down — by caste and class, by the frictions of the education system, by hostel life, by the expectations of people who love them. Who gave up what, for whom? Who was doing whom a favour? Set in the era of a hundred free messages a night, it moves from PUC classrooms into the harder arithmetic of adult life.
